How much horsepower can you win with chip tuning?
The horsepower gains you get with chip tuning depend on several factors: the engine type, whether a turbo is already installed, and how the manufacturer's software is configured. In practice, gains can vary from only 5 hp up to 100+ hp on certain engines.
Turbo = more profit
The biggest gains are achieved with engines that already fitted with a turbo from the factoryHere, the tuner adjusts the software to increase turbo pressure and optimize injection. Typical gains with stage 1 chip tuning:
-
Turbocharged petrol (e.g. 1.4 TSI, 2.0 TFSI, 1.5 EcoBoost):
+25 to +60 hp -
Diesel with turbo (e.g. 2.0 TDI):
+20 to +50 hp -
Without turbo (e.g. 1.6 petrol):
+5 to +12 hp
Why do the numbers vary?
Not every car is equal. The profit depends, among other things:
-
The manufacturer's motor software (sometimes 'squeezed' for market -technical reasons)
-
The state of maintenance
-
Fuel quality
-
Heat management and turbo size
Note: the tuner can promise many horsepower, but a safe and sustainable tuning always takes the margins of your motorcycle into account.
More horsepower? Then often also need extra upgrades
Do you want more than stage 1 power? Then you will soon find yourself at stage 2 of 3 tuning, which also requires upgrades such as:
-
Down pipe
-
Intercooler
-
Fuel pump
-
Air inlet
-
Link or DSG software

Advice from JT Products
Don't be blinded by just horsepower gains. Always ask about the torque (Nm) and the way the engine responds. Sometimes a car with "only" 30+ hp feels much faster, simply because of better torque buildup at low revs.
